Free Version for Open Source Projects

When will a free version be available for open source projects?

I would like to use Tender to complement a github / lighthouse setup for a new open source project. The posting at [1] stated that this feature was coming soon, and I would like to enlist it as soon as possible. If the process requires manual intervention (ie, hasn't been instituted in the GUI), feel free to email me any relevant information to get started hosting my open source project support here.

Thanks,

-- Cody

I can't say specific dates, we're still trying to nail down the featureset for open source that will work out best. What I can say is that it's definitely a priority for us -- we love giving back to the Open Source community, so want to do that in any way possible with Tender.

But first we need to make sure we've got a stable platform to extend — and unfortunately that means focusing on paying customers for the immediate future. I'll be sure to let you know when we nail down a plan for this.

I'd like to see this as well, for the same reasons. Anything rather than use a standard forum/mailing list for OSS support!

We've been discussing the best way to offer OSS support. Here's our current train of thought:

    • Remove ability for private issues. O means open :)
    • Remove support functionality so it acts more like a forum and not a support request system.

One of my personal uses cases for Tender is using it to replace something like Google Projects. Those two items are two things I've personally wanted to disable in my own use of Tender for OSS.

    Any thoughts on those restrictions?

Removal of private issues is fine by me.

I'm not sure what you mean by "remove support functionality" other than removing the ability to receive emails at e.g. [email blocked]. I think this is a prime use case of Tender (and in fact -is- the reason I am so interested). In particular, this is one of the differentiators over using one of the standard open source forums.

We'd keep the email support, just not the 'support' aspect. No resolving of issues or anything like that. Basically, you'd have a forum/mailing list (depending on how you want to interact with it).

Hmm.. I'm not sure how that would play out. Isn't resolving an issue in Tender like closing a forum thread, or is there something more? If this is the case, I don't see why removing issue resolution functionality would be helpful.

Conceptually, as long as the ability to "attach a Tender issue to Lighthouse, or to my hosting company's support system, or a contact's Highrise todo list" remains, this should be fine. However, this depends highly on the specifics of what is stripped from the commercial version (please don't think I'm being picky - just trying to make it most applicable to myself and other OSS developers; any OSS version is already a major improvement for developers).

I expect many OSS developers would choose to use Lighthouse (with its OSS project support) anyhow, so I'm not sure removing issue tracking from the OSS version of Tender would be a huge deal. Again, this depends highly on the details. For instance, would removing issue resolution also remove issue resolution synchronization with Lighthouse (and thereby remove customer notification for resolved issues)?

Perhaps you could outline the reasons why you wanted to remove these features from your deployment on techno-weenie?

My thoughts for removing the workflow parts of Tender is that OSS projects don't generally have "support" so much as they just have people helping everyone out. I can't think of many people who would routinely go through and answer unanswered support requests, etc.

But, we don't really have a game plan either yet. We're just not sure how OSS projects would benefit most from a Tender, and what they might look for in it.
