Allowing search of both discussions and knowledge base

I see several discussions about the ability to search both the discussions and the knowledge base (KB) at the same time but each resolution seems to only partially address this. One resolution was to default the top search to the KB and the other was the cool feature that autosuggests FAQ articles. Both nice but not a full solution.

Will there be a way for our customers to search both at the same time?

Alternately, we've had requests to at least copy the search text over to the discussions search tab when selected. Now it works this way:

  1. Top search used to search
  2. KB articles found but user needs a discussion search
  3. User clicks the Discussions search tab to start the search there
  4. Search text is cleared and previous text is lost
  5. User has to type the search text in again

What we're planning on doing in the near future is defaulting the Discussions search to show 2-3 FAQ articles at the top and the rest of the results being discussions. When we do this, we'll be disabling the option to search either FAQ or Discussions in the admin (as the default will be a sort of 'both').

Does that sound like it would solve the problem? I'll have to see where we are with implementing this.

That sounds ideal Kyle. Fewer options = fewer mistakes. Thanks!
