Global Banner Feature
Have you guys considered implementing a Global Banner feature?
Something where the staff can edit a quick line of text that shows up on the top of every page, etc.

It's come up a few times. I've been thinking about it more lately though. Originally we wanted to do some form of status integration that would show the banner, like when we post service announcements and stuff.
Would you all be using it daily or just for something like downtime/service notices and such?

Our specific use case is to communicate a "freeze" of the Public Discussion area. Essentially we're asking our customers not to post new discussions anymore because we've opened up our primary ticketing system to all customers now.
Previously users @ Engine Yard who were self-supported (not on a paid support plan) were directed to our community.engineyard.com Tender app.
But now we're wanting to retire the forum in favor of having them file a ticket or read from our knowledge base (docs.engineyard.com).

Ah, that makes sense. We don't have support for that.
The only solution I have off the top of my head is to make the forum private, and set a note on the login page to redirect future customers to the proper support channel. When you set a site to private, you can set a note on the login page http://d.pr/iMg1
