It doesn't seem possible to add tags to a posting. Is this not a feature yet or is it something that needs to be enabled?
How do I request it as a feature?

Kevin,
We don't have a tagging feature. Some people use their queues in this way. I can make a ticket requesting it as a feature. Thank you for your feedback!

Hi Amanda,
A ticket would be great. Is there any way to track the tickets you create or are they not visible to users?

Hi Kevin,
Just so you know, it's unlikely we'll add tags at least in the
short-medium term.
That being said, what is the use case where you need tags?

Hi Courtenay,
A bit of background first. I'm a user on the Moneydance forum. This forum is organised into sections such as 'Suggestions', 'Bugs' etc.
These are the situations where I think tags would help.
Reducing duplication.
Users can request features in the Suggestions section of the forum. The same feature is often requested by different users in different threads. Allowing the user to specify tags would make it easier for Tender to display possible duplicates before the posting is created.
Targeted subscriptions.
As mentioned, there are multiple sections on the forum. We can subscribe to receive updates to a given section. Moneydance itself has many features. Users may start threads related to a given feature in any of the current sections on the forum. Its not currently possible to subscribe to postings related to a feature regardless of which section of the forum it is posted in. This is something that could be handled by tags (see StackOverflow.com for an example).
Visibility of Popularity.
We have users requesting multiple features, Moneydance can only deliver so many features, users get frustrated when their feature is not delivered and everyone thinks their feature is the most important. A tag cloud would be a simple way of improving the visibility of the relative popularity of feature requests.
That last point is also related to the question I asked in my previous posting. Is there any way to track the tickets you create or are they not visible to users?
Cheers,
Kevin

Ticket numbers show up in the sidebar and we generally update the
discussion when we work on it.. but you don't get to see into our
development process beyond this.
The eternal balance here is that we really do try hard to keep the
reporting process simple - having users select tags (or, shudder, come
up with their own) seems perilous to me..
I can see how a controlled dictionary of tags might work well. I've
been considering something like this for reporting too (so you could
see stats based on a given subject only).
Thanks for the detailed response. These can really help the feature
get traction.

A controlled dictionary of tags is a bad idea. To be useful as a tag system it would have to contain hundreds, if not thousands, of entries. It has to be populated by someone and has to be updated over time. It limits a user's choices and therefore limits the accuracy of any metrics obtained from it.
I'm guessing the peril you refer to is the idea that the number of tags will grow large. I don't see this as being a problem worth worrying about and it shouldn't outweigh the advantages gained from an arbitrary tag system. An auto-completion feature should be used to help users choose tags that already exist without preventing them from creating a new tag if they want to. Another great feature from stackoverflow is that the tag auto-complete option displays the tag count. This helps users to consolidate on a single tag where there are two similar choices. It would also be quite easy to implement a tag merge function to reduce the number of similar tags.

Kevin,
Thank you for your thoughtful feedback. All of your suggestions are now associated with the development ticket. Like Courtenay said, it's unlikely that we will get to this feature anytime soon, but having some concrete ideas will help when we do get to it in our development process.
