Import from existing forum

I was wondering if there will be any way to import an existing forum into Tender. This would be great especially for the search before issue submission, since a lot of questions have been answered before in our current forum.

I realize a proper importer would be quite a project on its own though.

Looking forward to the public beta!

We have a Beast importer that works pretty well. What forum software are you using currently?

We're currently using PunBB. What kind of data does the Beast importer expect (MySQL dump, CSV, ...)? Maybe we could convert ours to fit the Beast table layout?

    A bbPress importer would rule.

Not quite sure where things stand on the API just yet, but there is always the option to open source tools such as import scripts.

This won't happen before launch, but we will have a decent api and some scripts you can run to import from your own schema.

Excellent. Any chance to get a rough timeframe? We can't really start using Tender and import after...

Fredrik, at the moment that's hard to say. We're a few days off from going public and a week or two from smoothing the first of the kinks out. Once we're public though we can push the API out so users can start working on tools such as importers.

Hey guys, email the DB blob to [email blocked] and I'll take care of it this week. If PunBB has its own external format, that's great. Also let me know which site in tender you're using. Ideally you'd have your support users already created, so the import can link those posts up. Also, maybe you could setup a dummy user with a password, so i can test the authentication on PunBB and Beast after the import.

The importer we have is internal, but it does store the password hashes in their native format. Beast, for instance, had an application global hash and a password reset hash. Tender has its own custom "old school beast" authentication that gets converted to Tender style authentication when the user updates their password. Ideally I'll have some mass import API (and a preprocessor that converts your PunBB data to the Tender import format). But we're still a ways away from that. I understand you guys want to get going right away, so I'll do what I can to expedite the process.

Please be at least partly sure that you like Tender though, I won't be too thrilled if you then use Tender for a day and decide it's not your cup of tea. I don't need written confirmation or anything, just some confirmation (tip of the hat, high five, etc) that you have poked around on Tender and think it'll work out :)

Just checking rick that my emails didn't end up in a spam folder. I
sent a Beast db dump for inkling.tenderapp.com on Wed.

Yup I got it, "this week" sorta turned into "this weekend" :)

Rick, no sweat. Sounds like you had a busy weekend in Chicago
hacking on Rails? Hope that was fun!

Resolving... if anyone else has data that they want to import, please open a new private discussion w/ the necessary details. Thanks!
